How to use a Retinoid

 1. Start by using the product every 3 nights for two weeks, and then every other night for two weeks followed by nightly.  If your skin is still dry, back off and continue to use it 2 to 3 times per week. It is better to use it less often as long as you’re using it consistently.

2. Only use a pea-sized amount for your ENTIRE face. Avoid the creases around the eyes, nose and corners of the mouth – these are areas that our skin is thinner and going to get dry/irritated more easily.

3. After you wash your face, pat dry and wait 20 minutes prior to applying your retinoid. Applying the retinoid on wet skin can make it penetrate stronger and become more irritating.

4. In the morning, apply a sunscreen with SPF 30+, as retinoids can make you more sun sensitive. If you do get sunburned, stop using your retinoid until your skin is fully recovered.

5. Do not have any waxing or laser treatments to the face while using a retinoid.   Your skin is much more sensitive, you are risking tearing or burning the skin which could leave long term hyperpigmentation.  Ideally, discontinue use for 1-2 weeks prior to any treatment and be sure to inform your provider that you use a topical retinoid.

If you are continuing to have dryness/irritation, you may not be using the right retinoid for your skin and may need to consult your dermatologist for the best recommendation.
